Maintaining Your Metal Carport for Long-Lasting Performance

Maintaining Your Metal Carport for Long-Lasting Performance

There are many things to love about choosing metal for your next carport. Metal carports are surprisingly affordable, they can be designed in many different ways, can include many custom features, and will last for years. On that last point, any quality metal carport is going to hold up nicely for years, but if you want to make sure yours lasts as long as possible, it’s a good idea to take a few additional steps to keep it in good condition.

Before you can keep up the condition of your metal carport, you must first own one of high quality and have it in place on your property. For that, American Carports, Inc. is the ideal partner for the job. Our Build & Price tool makes it easy to create exactly what you have in mind for a new carport, and you can always contact us if you need any help along the way. We’d love to get started on this project right away!

Carport Maintenance: It’s an Easy Job

Before getting into specifics on metal carport maintenance, we can deliver some good news – this is an easy job. There simply isn’t that much that has to be done to keep your carport in good condition since metal tends to handle the elements quite nicely on its own. That’s especially true when you buy from a trusted supplier like American Carports, Inc., as we use quality components to make sure your new carport is set up for a life of reliable performance and durability.

An Occasional Wash

One of the best things you can do for your metal carport is just to wash it down from time to time with a hose. Spraying it off will wash away any dirt or debris that has built up over the months or years. Not only will this leave the carport looking great, but it will also help to avoid any damage that might wear through the paint and start to lead to rust. You can think of washing your carport in the same way that you might think about washing your car – it’s something that you should do from time to time to keep it in good condition and looking its best.

Complete a Visual Inspection

It’s also a good idea to walk through your carport once in a while to look for any signs of trouble. One common issue is little critters or pests that might be making a home in the corners of the carport. You don’t want this problem to grow from a small nest to a dangerous infestation – especially in the case of bees – so act quickly if you spot signs of animal life getting a little too comfortable in the space.

Beyond animal activity, also pay attention to any spots of rust that you might see, even if they are currently small. Rust is a sign that water is getting to the steel somehow, and that matter will need to be addressed or the problem is going to get worse over time.

Watch the Snow Load

If you live in a climate where winter weather means lots of snow, that snow can eventually put quite a strain on the roof of your carport. Going with a carport that features a vertical roof design is a good start, as that will encourage the snow to simply slide away and not accumulate, but it’s still possible to end up with quite a bit on top, depending on the conditions. Make it a point to safely remove at least some of the snow as it starts to build up so you can prevent any issues with the roof giving way under the weight.

An Eventual Repainting

This last point isn’t something that you’ll need to think about anytime soon if you have just purchased a new carport. However, there will likely come a time when you need to go ahead and repaint the entire structure, both to freshen up its look and to make sure it continues to be protected from the elements. Repainting a metal carport isn’t particularly difficult, but it does require quite a bit of prep work to sand down the surface and get it ready for a new coat. Keep this potential job in mind if you have an older carport that is starting to show its age.
