Carport vs Garage

April 15, 2019/in ACI, Blog, Buildings, Carports, Custom, Garage, Informative, News, Our Specialty, Product Reviews, Promotions, Questions, Standard, Steel Structures, Uncategorized /by clickgiant

If you’re only worried about sun, hail, or snow ruining your car’s paint job, a simple carport can do the job perfectly, but a garage can do a lot more. The full coverage is great for keeping your tools and other things safe as well. Both carports and garages come with benefits as well as disadvantages, and in the end the decision is all yours!

    Carports

A carport is a fully-open or semi-covered steel structure that attaches to your home or stands freely anywhere on your property. The number one reason to choose a carport instead of a garage is that it’s the more affordable way to protect your vehicles. But just because a carport is less expensive than a garage doesn’t mean it can’t look amazing, especially here with American Carports. We have a variety of details you can customize for your building, so you can make sure that your carport suits you perfectly. Other advantages that a carport has that a garage wouldn’t would be that they are much quicker and easier to build.

Parking your car in a carport will keep weather conditions from destroying its paint so quickly, and can also save it from blowing tree branches and hail during bad storms. The roof of a carport will also intercept falling tree sap.

A carport also has some disadvantages. An open structure like a carport isn’t very secure. A carport can’t protect your vehicles from animals or people, so all your belongings might be at risk for damage. Also, you can’t be completely protected from wind, rain and sun rays.

     Garages

Unlike a carport, a garage is a completely enclosed structure with walls, roofing, and an entrance that can be closed. A garage offers you more coverage, concealment, and protection for your vehicles, boats, or materials. Because a garage has four walls, it provides complete protection from sun, hail, rain and wind. Plus, it keeps animals out. With good door locks, your garage will be a secure place to store not only your cars but household overflow, tools and lawn equipment.

If your family grows and you need the space for an extra room, you might be able to convert your garage into “livable” space in the future. You can buy all kinds of shelves, cabinets, drawers and hooks designed specifically for garages, which typically are large enough for your parked cars plus some work and storage space.

The main disadvantage with a garage is the price, but with all the protection provided, it really might be worth it. Another disadvantage can be getting the permit for your unit. Since the building is fully enclosed, it requires more safety necessities. For that reason you would have to check with your city’s permits office for all of the rules and regulations.

Considering these differences, it’s really up to you to decide what you’re looking for. Hopefully we’ve helped you decide. You can definitely get started by calling today to speak with one of our sales representatives for a FREE quote! We will work with you until we find the perfect metal building for your needs. And we can always provide a free sketch along with your quote to help you visualize your project to the fullest. Don’t forget to ask about our financing options. We are now offering rent-to-own in all our service areas.

#FlashBackFriday Labor Weekend Events

September 12, 2018/in ACI, Blog, News/Press, Product Reviews, Questions, Videos /by clickgiant

During Labor weekend, American Steel Carports was part of two carnivals, from two different states.

The Hog Days carnival is a wonderful event for families to enjoy on Labor Day weekend. The carnival traditionally hosts an annual “ Hog Day Parade,” consisting of a “one-mile march of bands, floats, and everything red, white and blue to celebrate [their] roots in agriculture.” Team members from our Illinois shop were part of the carnival and the parade this year, proudly representing our company.

We decided to have a carport on a trailer with a hunting blind, as you can see on the following pictures:

We were told that it was a bad idea, but we took up the challenge, and the event was a success.

Continuing with our experiences of the holiday, we took part in the Fulton County Fair in Ohio. This was a really nice fair, with big events and attractions, as you can see in the following pictures:

Installer Crews: Reasons behind installer shortages…

September 11, 2018/in ACI, Blog, News, Product Reviews, Promotions /by clickgiant

Do you need a hands-on job with great pay? American Carports, Inc. is always looking for subcontractors who are skilled in the installation of metal carports and buildings. We refer to our installation crews simply as “Installers” and immediately consider them to be part of the AC family!

Although our Installers receive great pay, experience, travel, and a secure job, there are several reasons why we have a shortage of knowledgeable and capable crews. Carport and metal building installation requires individuals who are able to work in extreme weather conditions and are also willing to travel and work away from home for long periods of time. As a subcontractor, you would have to provide your own vehicles, tools, and lodging and work on a commission basis. This field of work requires crews of at least 2-3 individuals and is considered dangerous due to sharp objects, high altitudes, etc. This work environment is fast-paced and requires a high and meticulous level of skill as well as excellent time management abilities. You must be able to pay attention to detail and solve problems on site. Additionally, you are the face of our company, so we expect great on-site customer service and communication skills. You must be able to deal with not only our satisfied customers, but also the unhappy ones. With this job comes great responsibility. You are the one in charge of making sure that you, your crew, and the company look their best! Customers tend to remember installer crews, often calling us to commend the great job they did.

Many have tried, but not many succeed. Remember, there is work, just not enough people willing to take the initiative. Not just anyone is cut out for this job, which is why we HIGHLY value the crews we currently have.

If you are interested and think you and your crew have the necessary set of skills, give us a call today  or visit us in person to apply!

What is Galvanized Steel?

September 6, 2018/in Blog, News/Press, Product Reviews /by clickgiant

Steel is known for its strength, formability, and versatility. Perhaps that’s why the largest consumer of steel, housing and construction, puts it the most to use everyday .  Perhaps it’s due to the fact that galvanized steel is the most durable coating there is.

What exactly is galvanized steel?

Steel is considered galvanized after it goes through the galvanization process. Steel is submerged into liquid zinc whereafter produces a tough, fortifying cover of zinc-iron alloy and zinc metal. This glaze fights moisture, making steel last for 50 years. Maybe that’s why it’s been used since 1742.

The first step of the galvanization process is the most important: surface preparation. Steel must be free of oils, dirt, and grease. Thus, it’s submerged in caustic acid and then rinsed with water. The next stage is called pickling, which is a process that aims to remove oxidation from the steel with hydrochloric acid. Fluxing, or diffusion soldering, is a technique that targets impurities and reduces it. If this process is not done correctly, the steel would not be coated when dipped into the zinc.

After the cleansing, the big step finally comes. The steel is dipped into a 850 F kettle containing 98% of pure molten zinc. How does one know the liquid is correctly proportioned? The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) has to approve its adequacy first. Then after 10 minutes or less, the steel is carefully removed from the bath. The coating occurs due to a chemical reaction between the zinc, iron, and other metals that mix in order to enhance the quality of the coat. The steel is then let to cool off by air itself or with water.

A process called quenching is performed to further enhance the coat. A mixture of water and other chemicals are poured into a tank, whereafter is layered onto the steel to protect during transportation and storage. This additional step is not necessary, but in some factories, the process is taken.

This next step consists of  inspecting the quality of the coating. At this point, it’s cooled off and dry. Multiple tests, physically and laboratory, are run in order to examine the thickness, appearance, and adherence of the coat. Ultimately, what is created is a coating so strong that combats natural factors from deteriorating it.

But if steel is said to be resistant to a handful of elements, why is galvanization performed?

Galvanizing simply further enhances the quality of steel even more, making it last for more than 50 years. The advantages are countless.

For example:

    • It’s tough. In fact, it’s the toughest protective cover for steel. Apart from the organic strength of steel itself, galvanizing the material makes it withstand damage from natural elements.

    • In addition to its guaranteed 50 year + lifespan, the touch-ups are minimal. When you purchase galvanized steel, maintaining your carport won’t be difficult. The protection it offers makes steel less prone to the damaging effects of environmental factors.

    • Cost efficiency is another advantage of galvanized steel. Because its durability is long, you won’t spend money on replacing or repairing.

    • Moisture and oxygen reacts well with the coating, reducing rust expansion from a minimal to nothing at all. The rusting that may occur, however, develops after the 50 years. Plus, the zinc covering corrodes before the steel underneath.

    • Unlike many protective covers, galvanized steel is scratch-resistant.

  • The coat also helps with the appearance of steel, leaving it with a glossy finish.

Because of its good reputation, galvanized steel is used in many other products. Those who live in steel-based homes may have galvanized roofs, and vehicles contain many parts that are steel galvanized as well.

Steel is one of the most beneficial and effective materials in the world. But when it surpasses the galvanizing process, it becomes even better. That’s why we only use galvanized steel. Our customers are our top priority and we want to sell the best to the best.

Can a Steel Building Increase my Home Value?July 24, 2018/in Blog, News/Press, Product Reviews, Questions /by clickgiant

Lately, I’ve been seeing steel buildings increase in popularity because builders can use these durable, versatile, and flexible construction solutions for every application.

Not only have homeowners utilized steel buildings for residential purposes, but also builders have made additions to their existing properties. There’s no doubt that a steel building garage will increase the value of a home, but it’s also important to note that it will help raise the overall property value. In an article in Realtor Magazine, the official magazine of the National Association of Realtors, Peggy Patenaude, an agent with Prudential Howe & Doherty Realtors in Andover, Massachusetts, says that a garage definitely increases the value of a property if it’s in a mid-level or higher price range and in a cold climate.

Moreover, if a home doesn’t have one, it may prove to be a deal breaker. According to Patenaude, “I think a two-car attached or detached garage can add $30,000 to a home’s value; a one-car attached or detached garage may increase it by $15,000 to $20,000.” The author of the Realtor Magazine article spoke with real estate investor and author Grant Cardone, as well, whose company is based in Los Angeles. In the article, he says that having a garage is especially critical in this turbulent real estate market.

Yet Cardone goes on to comment that he’ll consider buying a house as an investment if it doesn’t have a garage, as long as there’s room to add it. “It was different four years ago because there was so much less inventory,” he says. But Cardone agrees that the investment is a good one. He mentions that the “average two-car garage will return the investment two to two-and-a-half times. It doesn’t mean you have to have one with polished or painted floors and other fancy amenities, but it does have to be clean and roomy. Adding some extra square footage doesn’t cost that much more with this type of construction.”

Steel buildings also utilize clear span framing, which provide open space without bulky trusses or internal columns. For many shoppers, the existence of a steel building garage is the factor that can convince them to purchase a home, so it’s almost always a valuable addition to your property. Still, that’s not always the case with buildings of traditional construction. While a brand new wooden pole barn will have good curb appeal, it can become difficult to maintain over the years. Steel doesn’t rot, warp, twist, or bend like wood does. Since wood is an organic material, over time it will decay when exposed to the elements. Do you want to replace boards or wooden components every few years? An old wooden building that hasn’t been regularly maintained actually could make your property worth less than having no structure on your property at all.

Another thing to think about: in many cases, banks, lenders, and appraisers in specific cities or counties don’t consider a pole barn a ”permanent structure” because of the lack of a foundation and the fact that the walls don’t always need to be secured to the ground with concrete or other permanent methods. Additionally, pole barns aren’t typically engineered to meet structural requirements, as they are more like an agricultural shed.

Pre-engineered metal buildings require proper foundations, which means these buildings are permanent structures. Structures with foundations, as they are considered permanent by most permitting offices and appraisers, typically help a property appreciate in value over time. Since some wooden structures and pole barns aren’t considered permanent structures, adding them won’t likely increase your property value. A steel building is engineered to stay safe, be functional, and hold its aesthetic value for decades. The steel building garage you decide to build today is going to look strikingly similar and would confer the same or more value to someone else in several decades—with little or no work from you. Even if you decide not to sell and pass your land on to a family member, you’re setting them up for future success right now. Isn’t that worth your investment?

3-Bay Metal Building

July 23, 2018/in ACI, Blog, Product Reviews, Questions /by clickgiant

If you have multiple vehicles at your house, it may be a little challenging to get every single one protected from the weather, especially if the only garage you have is the one attached to your house. Moving the other cars just to get one out can be quite annoying, too, especially if you’re in a hurry or the weather isn’t cooperating.

This scenario happens pretty often. That’s why American Carports encourages you to acquire a 3-bay metal garage for your vehicles. The big advantage of having your garage doors on the side of the building, instead of the end, is that expanding in length is not as expensive as expanding in width. End walls are pricier due to the material needed. With your garage doors on the side, your cars will be just as secure, and at a lower cost.

Take a look at this 26’W x 36’L x 12’H 3-bay metal building as an example:

• A-Frame Vertical Roof

• Horizontal Sides & Ends

• 2 – Windows

• 36×80 Walk-In Door

• 3 – 10×10 Roll-Up Doors (on the side)

*Disclaimer: interior designs may vary by state or region. Buildings may require additional trusses to meet local codes. Prices are subject to change at any time without notice. Please contact our sales department for our latest prices.*

Remember that we can always adjust the length, width, and height according to your needs. Door sizes can always be changed. The pictures are just examples of designs and styles that our customers opt for according to their specifications and tastes.

You can always come up with your own design as well. If you have a project in mind, or if you’re looking for a more customized building, give us a call! Let one of our sales representatives assist you. Keep in mind that we can always provide a free sketch for visual purposes until we get to your desired design. Prepare to not Make MistakesJuly 19, 2018/in Blog, News/Press, Product Reviews, Questions /by clickgiant

Imagine that you’re making a significant purchase. What if someone stepped in to tell you about all the things that could go wrong when making it?

Granted, American Steel Carports will certainly help you avoid problems, but sometimes we come across customers who decide to start the process before consulting a professional.

This is when customers find themselves in a situation that becomes difficult to correct, even for the professionals at American Steel. Here are three of the most common blunders customers make, so hopefully you know how to avoid them.

1. Prepare the foundation before you get the plans.

Many times customers decide they want a building of a certain size and try to speed up the process by pouring concrete before engineered drawings have been provided. However, a steel building isn’t a typical box that just sits on top of a concrete slab. Remember, this building is going to be subjected to wind and weather loads. Engineers and detailers consider your specific geographic area when they finalize foundation and building designs. In addition, you shouldn’t pour with preliminary anchor bolt patterns. Don’t pour your concrete before you have your plans—it’s a HUGE blunder!

2. Never take a delivery of a steel building before you have the proper permits.

Remember, each steel building is engineered specifically for its job site location, so it’s not like you can easily erect it somewhere else. The way to avoid oversights is to pay for permit drawings ahead of time—a small percentage of the total cost of the building. This also locks in your steel price, so when you’re ready for fabrication, any increase in the price of steel won’t affect you. It is significantly less expensive to make changes that will pass the permitting process at the drawing stage. If you wait until you’re at the fabrication and delivery stages, you run the risk of making a mistake.

3. Work with an in-house detailing team.

The benefit of an in-house detailing team is two-fold. First, it allows you to make changes or adjustments to your plan based on your changing needs or wants, on alterations to the structural code of your area, or even on budget demands—and it allows you to make these changes in hours or days rather than weeks. Time is of the essence with building. Steel prices may change, weather can change with the seasons (allowing only certain times to build), and contractors may change their quotes based on how long it takes to complete a project. The other benefit is that when it comes time for erection, you’re going to want to be able to speak with a professional in case you have problems or questions. Who better to speak with than the person who actually engineered the building? No one knows your building as well. An in-house engineering department allows you to have direct access to the detailer or engineer.

The steel building process is relatively easy—when you do it the right way.

Fully Vertical, Fully Insulated

July 16, 2018/in Blog, Product Reviews /by clickgiant

Our metal buildings offer great protection when it comes to inclement weather. The versatility of steel allows us to transform and shape your building according to your desired specifications and needs.

Despite the versatility of our buildings, however, one other option that we offer is insulation. Insulation can be a little pricey—but, in the end, it’s your belongings that are getting protected from the harsh weather conditions. Please be aware that insulation can only be installed on vertical metal buildings. That means that if you need your building to be fully insulated, the whole building must be vertical (siding). To learn more about our insulation please click here.

Take a look at this 24’W x 36’L x 9’H metal building that’s fully insulated:

•Fully Vertical

• Fully Insulated

• Three 9’x7′ Roll-Up Doors (two on the front end, and one on the side)

• 36″ x 84″ Heavy Duty Door (on the side)

• Concrete Anchors

• Welded “L” Brackets

*Interior designs may vary by state or region. The above design is effective for only a 30 PSF (ground snow load) and may require additional trusses to meet local codes. Additionally, lateral support might be required based on wind loads.

Since the slab is the same size as the metal building, we needed to include an “L” bracket to anchor the building without chipping the edge of the slab. Those come with an additional price.

There are endless ways to customize your metal building. If you have a sketch of what you’re picturing, our experts will work around the measurements and features in order to meet your needs. And with 12 different colors to choose from, you can add your own personal touch at no additional charge.

Metal Storage Building

July 11, 2018/in Blog, Product Reviews /by clickgiant

Looking for an affordable, strong, and well-built storage room? If the answer is yes, then American Carports is your choice!

Our company has over 20 years of experience specializing in the carport industry. In other words, we know how to deliver a great experience when it comes to metal buildings. Whether you’re looking for a barn, a storage room, a mini-storage unit, or even a big workshop, American Carports will be there to make sure that all of your needs and expectations are satisfied.

Remember that the buildings we post are just live examples of our customers’ creations and ideas. The dimensions and features such as doors, windows, colors, etc. can always be changed according to your needs and specifications. Another important fact to keep in mind is that concrete pads are always optional according to the type of building. If a building exceeds 30 feet in width, then it’s necessary to have a concrete pad, but anything below that can be installed on the ground or asphalt.

Take this 20’W x 21’L x 8’H storage building as an example:

This metal storage building is rocking our pewter gray color. It also has a 10’ x 8’ roll-up door and a walk-in door on the side, and it comes with our 90-mph wind warranty when all of the required concrete anchors are purchased.

We have a variety of buildings and designs for you to choose from. Have additional questions? Give us a call! Let one of our sales representatives assist you with any questions you may have.

Steel Garage for 2 Vehicles

July 9, 2018/in ACI, Blog, Customer Builds, Product Reviews /by clickgiant

Purchasing a metal garage may seem boring and complicated, but it doesn’t have to be. The number one reason why it might seem complicated is if you don’t know the dimensions that you’re looking for. It’s important to ask for a large amount of space in order to keep your vehicles protected; this will become handy in the future in case you want to use the extra space to store other belongings.

Our top priorities are to make sure that our customers get their metal garages at a lower price and ensure that their metal buildings meet their demands and expectations. As always, we can recommend sizes or features that will suit your needs, such as windows, walk-in doors, or even insulation if possible.

Since we’re talking about metal garages, why not look at this 24’W x 31’L x 10’H:

• A-Frame Vertical Roof

• Horizontal Sides and Ends

• Two 10’x8′  Roll-Up Doors (on the side)

• 36″x80″ Walk-In Door

• Four Windows (30″x30″)

• Concrete Anchors

This metal garage is very uniform and steady, rocking our pebble beige and barn red colors. Also, placing the roll-up doors on the side makes this a better option because it is cheaper to grow in length than in width.

Do you have something in mind? Give us a call! Ask to speak with a sales representative. Our experts will help you customize your unit in whatever way you want. Also, don’t forget to ask about our financing options.
