Door Selection Guide for a Custom Metal Garage Building

Door Selection Guide for a Custom Metal Garage Building

A metal garage building without the proper doors wouldn’t do you any good at all. Picking the right doors for your building is an important part of the design process and should not be overlooked as you prepare to finalize your order. In the guide below, we’ll help you understand the key factors for picking out the right doors.

One of the best things you can do when picking doors for your garage is to work with a supplier like American Carports, Inc. that makes customization easy. We take pride in the many features that we offer to our customers, and it all starts by using our Build & Price tool to create the building of your dreams. If you need help with that process or have some questions, simply contact us when you have a moment, and we’ll be happy to help.

2 Main Types of Doors

When talking about doors for garages, there are two main types to keep in mind – the large roll-up doors that allow things like vehicles to come in and out and walk-in doors that are meant for use by people. While you don’t have to include both of these kinds of doors in your garage layout, it’s a good idea to at least consider adding one or more of each of these elements to make your space as useful and convenient as possible.

If you are going to use your garage for parking, the inclusion of a roll-up door is non-negotiable – at least one will need to be included. Of course, if it’s a big garage, you might want to use two, three, or even four roll-up doors to provide easy access to the entire space. Even if the garage isn’t going to be focused on parking, roll-up doors make it easy to bring in big pieces of equipment or supplies for projects, and they make the space more flexible for storage, as well.

Perhaps the biggest advantage of a walk-in door is the ability to get into the garage without opening one of the big roll-up doors. Those doors can take a little bit of time to open and close, and you might not always have the opener on you. It’s particularly nice to be able to keep the big doors closed when the weather is ugly outside – you can just slip in the walk-in door without rolling up the big door and allowing the rain or snow to come in.

The Size Factor

You don’t need to think about the size of a walk-in door if you add one of those to your garage, as they are standard and just need to be big enough for people to walk through comfortably. You do, however, need to carefully consider how big the roll-up doors will be in your new garage.

If you will only be parking something like a small sedan in the garage, any roll-up door should do the trick. However, if you have a large truck, a boat, or an RV, a bigger door may be needed to get in and out without any trouble. And, don’t forget to consider the height of the door – this is particularly important for RVs that are taller than regular vehicles and might not clear through a standard door.

Think About Placement

The location of your doors in the garage is another variable to consider. To be able to move vehicles in and out comfortably, you need to have enough room to maneuver in front of the garage. Without that space, you won’t be able to turn around or get the right angle to drive into the garage safely. Also, if you put a walk-in door on the garage, consider adding it on the side of the building closest to your home so you can easily get from one structure to the other as fast as possible.

Future-Proof Your Garage

It’s worth considering the idea of adding more doors than you technically need right now just to make sure this garage will continue to work for you for as long as possible. For example, even if you don’t think you want to park in the garage at the moment, that feeling or need may change down the line. So, adding a roll-up door or two now makes a lot of sense, and they can just stay closed for the time being. Then, if your needs change and you do want to park inside, all you need to do is connect the garage door opener, and you’ll be ready to go.
