If you own a home and the property around that home, you almost certainly have homeowners insurance in place. That policy is typically required if you have a mortgage out on the home, although it’s a good idea to carry a policy even if you own the property outright. Some of the costliest things that can come up in and around a home are covered by a homeowners policy, so it really can be a lifesaver.
But what about your carport? If you’ve added a carport to your property, or you might do so in the future, is that structure covered? This is the topic at hand in the article below, so read on to make sure you understand how insurance and carports work.
Are you getting ready to build a new carport? This is a great project to add covered parking space to your property or to create a covered area for many other uses. Don’t Take Insurance Coverage for Carports for Granted
You can’t assume that there is any coverage included in your homeowners insurance policy for your carport. It’s possible that you do have coverage, but it’s certainly not a given – so taking a closer look at your policy or contacting your insurance agent is the only way to be sure.
As you would expect, your homeowners insurance policy will cover your home itself, which is typically listed on the policy as the main dwelling. So, that building is covered by the main part of the policy for a given amount. Anything attached to that building should be included in the coverage, such as a carport physically connected to the structure. So, in that case, your carport would very likely be covered by default.
If your carport is detached, you’d need to have coverage included in the policy for other structures on the property. That kind of coverage may or may not be there currently. If it is, you can expect that it will only be for a percentage of the value of the coverage that applies to the main house, such as 10%. It will be up to you to decide if any existing coverage you have in place is enough for your needs.
Consider Adding to Your Insurance Policy for a Carport
Should you happen to find that your homeowners insurance policy doesn’t currently cover your carport, it would be a good idea to consider adding this coverage as soon as possible. While metal carports are incredibly long-lasting, durable structures, you never quite know what the future will bring. You may find that adding a suitable amount of coverage for this and any other structures on your property isn’t particularly expensive and can offer you some well-deserved peace of mind.
Of course, this same line of thinking applies if you will be adding a new carport to your land soon and want to make sure it is financially protected. Depending on the size of the carport you build, and the various features you include, that structure could require a rather significant financial investment – and you don’t want something to happen to that building without having any kind of insurance in place. Take care of this matter right from the start so you don’t end up in a regrettable situation.
Review Your Homeowner’s Insurance Policy
Taking a look at your homeowners insurance policy is a good opportunity to review everything in the policy, not just the sections that relate to other structures. While going through this process, you can review the entire policy to ensure it is still sufficient for your needs and will provide what is required if something major happens to your property. It’s easy to take the status of your policy for granted, especially if you have lived in the same home for years, so consider seeing this as an opportunity to get on the right page with your policy and be sure that everything is set for the years ahead.
