How to Choose the Right Size Metal Garage for Your Cars

How to Choose the Right Size Metal Garage for Your Cars

A garage is the ideal space to park cars. With a fully enclosed space to serve as a home for your vehicles throughout the year, you can keep them safe from the elements and make sure they remain in good condition. If you are going to build a new garage to house your cars, it’s critical that you figure out exactly how big that garage needs to be, and that’s the topic we are going to tackle in this article.

Once you are ready to order a new building, American Carports, Inc. is the perfect partner for the job. We have been serving customers successfully for years, and you will be impressed by our pricing and excellent customer service. The Ideal Dimensions for a Single-Car Metal Garage

If you are building a garage that is only intended to park one vehicle, the starting point for dimensions for such a garage are 12’ wide and 22’ long. At these dimensions, you should be able to park most standard vehicles comfortably, and you’ll have no problems opening the doors to get in and out.

Of course, it does need to be said that such dimensions are not going to work for every vehicle. Obviously, a large truck takes up more space than a compact sedan, so you need to take into account the vehicle that you want to park before you settle on dimensions. It’s always best to err slightly on the bigger side when possible so you have a bit of wiggle room to play with.

One other point to mention here is the height of your garage. If you are driving something that is particularly tall – a lifted truck, or maybe an RV – make sure to consider the vertical dimension so you don’t run into trouble with being able to get the vehicle safely through the roll-up door and inside the garage.

How to Size Your Metal Garage for Multiple Vehicles

The math is pretty simple as you start to add additional vehicles to your garage plans. If a standard one-car garage is going to be 12’ wide, you can look at 24’ as a standard width for two cars to park comfortably. Some “two car” garages are going to be narrower than that 24’ dimension, but such spaces make it particularly tricky to successfully park two vehicles while still getting in and out without any trouble. For each additional car that you add to your plan, just tack on another 12’ of width as a good starting point and then customize the plan from there to suit your needs.

Accounting for Storage and Space in Your Metal Garage Design

So far, the numbers we have been discussing are focused primarily on building a garage that is going to serve your parking needs. But what if you want to do other things with the garage space than just park? Most likely, you are going to want to be able to put some things in your garage for storage, and doing so is going to require additional space.

For that, you have two options – either make the garage wider or make it deeper. So, for example, if you want a two-car garage with some room for storage, you could make it 30’ wide rather than 24’. That way, you’ll have additional space on each side to add some shelves or other types of storage. On the other hand, you could opt to make the garage deeper with the intention of storing things at the back in the area that the cars don’t occupy. In this scenario, you might stick with the 24’ width but instead go with a 30’ depth.

The right option in your situation is going to depend largely on the shape of the land you have available for this new garage. By customizing your plan to make it fit with the layout of your available land and how you want to access the garage, you should be able to fit in enough space for your vehicles and your other things.

Finalize Dimensions and Begin Construction

The trick with building a garage that is going to serve as a parking space for your vehicles is settling on exactly the right dimensions for that building – you don’t want it to be too big or too small. Hopefully, with some help with the information above, you’ll be able to make that decision with confidence and order your new garage right away. We would love to serve you!
