Live in the North? You’d better watch out for the Snow!

Vertical siding buildings are the most recommended when it comes to states that get a considerable amount of snow. The vertical roof allows natural elements like snow, water, dirt, leaves, and dust to slide off easily without the need for constant maintenance, unlike other roof styles. And if the vertical roof can give you all that, imagine having vertical sides! It would definitely make your metal garage maintenance-free!

Another cool feature that we offer is our overhead doors. These doors create more of a residential look, and they can actually be connected to a garage opener. Please be aware that American Carports does not offer that type of service: we would only provide the installation of your metal building and the overhead door.

This 18’W x 26’L x 10’H metal garage is a perfect example of a fully vertical (a.k.a., maintenance-free) building:

  • 16’x7′ Overhead door
  • 4 – 30″x30″ Windows (2 on the back end, 2 on the side)
  • 36″x80″ Walk-In Door (on the side)

There are many ways to customize your metal garage! Before making a purchase, though, it’s recommended that all of our customers talk with their local building departments to get the necessary permits. Remember that not all states and counties are the same: some might require additional plans or calculations, while others would take the generic plans. Also, know that our generic plans come free when you place your order with us.

Give us a call and let one of our experts help you build that garage of your dreams! Does your area have a higher snow load? Let our experts know, and we’ll work with your requirements until we meet them. Want to see our buildings in person? Call us and ask for your local dealer! And don’t forget to ask about our financing options.

Cut off Times

We are entering that time of the year again when the weather starts dropping, the snow starts coming and we make our cut off dates.

What are cut off dates?

They are the time frame where we will be halting delivery on units in certain regions.

Why cut off dates?

Because although we would love to take care of customers 365 days a year, it’s highly unlikely due to the weather variables that are far beyond our control.

When do we start delivering again?

We will start up in full steam in the spring delivering and installing new units.

What states have been cut off for 2018?

October 31 – Oregon, Nevada, Upper Northeast California.

We can’t wait to get started installing your buildings in the spring. Take care, everyone!

Are all of Your Belongings Stored and Protected?

Metal agricultural buildings offer great protection for farm equipment and even livestock, but these traditional units are not only for farm use. In fact, many of our customers opt to construct a metal agricultural barn for their vehicles. As always, we recommend that our customers check with their local building departments if their metal buildings meet the local codes before purchasing any of our units. Local codes from California may differ from those in any other state, especially if the building is going to be put up in an urban area.

One of the most popular buildings this year has been the ag barn. This barn can be used for many purposes. The most common one, of course, is as a barn, keeping livestock safe from the rain, intense heat and freezing cold. Some customers opt to enclose part of the lean-tos to store animal feed or farm equipment. On the other hand, there are customers who just love the design and prefer to use it as a garage for their vehicles. If you have land and space available, that would be a very interesting project.

Take a look at this metal barn installed near Chiloquin, OR:

  • 20’W x 41’L x 12’H (main unit)
  • A-Frame Vertical Roof
  • Horizontal Siding
  • 10×10 Roll-Up Door (front end)
  • 36″x80″ Walk-In Door (front end)
  • 2 – 30″x30″ Windows

  • 10’W x 41’L x 10’/8’H Lean-Tos
  • A-Frame Vertical Roof
  • Horizontal Sides
  • 2 – 9×7 Roll-Up Doors (one on each lean-to)

One of the main advantages of this barn is its vertical roof; since Oregon is a state with constant snow, the panels running from the peak toward the eaves allow snow to slide off without the need for constant maintenance, like other types of roofs.

Should you always go for a vertical roof?

Not necessarily. Although vertical roofs are the best choice when it comes to maintenance, if you live in an area that rarely gets snow, it’s not necessary. However, it’s highly recommended to get a vertical roof if your carport exceeds 30’ in length in order to avoid leaks in the future.

You can customize your metal building! Give us a call, and we will help you build the metal barn of your dreams. Remember that we also offer financing options if you need a little help purchasing your metal barn. Ask your representative about it.

Site of Installation

Site readiness is an essential part of installation. Per company policy, we require that the site of installation for any carport or metal building be completely level or have a slope of no greater that 3”. Our group of installers can refuse to install on unlevel ground if an issue arises.

Utility/Power Lines:

American Carports also recommends that utility lines be marked to ensure that we do not damage your property. We are not liable for damage on unmarked utility lines. Also, to ensure the safety of our installers, we do not install buildings within 10’ of active power lines.

Concrete Slab:

Concrete is a customer’s responsibility and must be level and a minimum of 4” thick, with a 12” x 12” footer and a minimum of 3” or more all the way around so that we can avoid chipping the edge of the slab. (Specs could change based on building size and local codes.) Please contact us if you choose to go with a flush slab. Concrete must cure for a minimum of 2 weeks prior to installation. You can purchase plans for concrete after the order is placed. A full concrete slab is not necessary for all buildings. Please contact us for more options.

Gravel:

When pouring gravel, make sure it is level and compact, and don’t forget to add an extra amount of gravel around the perimeter of the unit to avoid erosion.

Space for Installation:

We also require a minimum of 2’ of room around the area of installation. If you feel that a fence, tree, home, bush, etc. could interfere with the installation, we recommend letting your sales person know before placing the order so that the order isn’t rejected later in the scheduling process or on the day of installation.

Installing Over Objects:

If you need our crews to install over any object, we MUST have a picture on file with the dimensions. Some objects may require an extra labor fee. Please let your sales person know when placing your order or make sure to let your secretary know so that she can verify if a labor fee will be needed.

Site Modifications:

If you need to make site modifications, make sure you call 811 before you dig or visit http://call811.com/before-you-dig for information on your power/utility lines. Contacting 811 can help you avoid injury and the added expense of something going wrong.

Did you Know Insurance is Cheaper for a Steel Building?

It’s true. In fact, metal structures are one of the best options for your budget in many ways. You’ll save in terms of initial costs and long-term value, but there’s also more savings below the surface. While you’ll be hard-pressed to notice the differences between your steel structure and one constructed from traditional materials, your insurance company will. Enjoy the savings that come with your building being impervious to the leading causes of property damage.

Lower Risks for Worker Injury Lead to Lower Costs During Construction

The process of putting together a steel building is notably faster than for those made with other materials. Fewer people are required for the job, too. This results in big savings not only in labor, but also in insurance coverage. Smaller crews pay less for liability insurance, and lower overhead should lend itself to a smaller price per job. The speed of construction and smaller crew size are points you can use to negotiate better pricing with your contractor.

Lower Risks for Damage Lead to Lower Insurance Coverage

Insurance policies fluctuate in price based on many factors, including a structure’s location, age, risk of theft or damage, and value. Whether you have a cash value or replacement policy, you’ll find your rates are less for a metal structure. Why? Put simply, metal structures cost less to replace than properties made from wood or stone, and they present a much lower risk when it comes to ordinary damages.

According to insurance leaders, the top reasons for residential damage claims are:

  • Hail
  • Heavy winds
  • Water
  • Fire
  • Ice and snow loads

In addition, the average cost for termite damage every year is $3,000 per home. Those costs may or may not impact insurance rates, depending upon the type of policy you carry.

When reviewing each of the major dangers a typical structure faces, it becomes clear that many of those risks can be managed by building with steel.

Metal Roofs Typically Enjoy Class IV level UL 2218 Impact Resistance Testing

Metal roofs typically enjoy Class IV level UL 2218 Impact Resistance testing. They have the strength and resistance to withstand hail without pocking and without the type of damage that poses a risk to other areas of your building. They also don’t lose resistance over time like other types of roofing. You can trust your metal roof to look good and perform well for decades.

American steel buildings are also designed to withstand heavy winds. We use 100% red-iron steel beams known to resist winds traveling up to 170 mph. If you live in an area especially prone to harsh conditions, we can work together to make sure your structure is reinforced against damage. You can also speak to one of our sales professionals about our previous buildings that have stood up to the very worst weather.

Our buildings are resistant to water damage, as well. Unlike wooden structures or low-grade steel beams, our materials won’t rot in excessively moist conditions. You won’t have to deal with dangerous mold taking over your structure either. And because you’re dealing with a metal roof, you’ll have fewer worries about water leaks during storms.

Steel Buildings Decrease the Risks of Fire and Natural Disaster Damage

Fire is a major worry for most home and business owners, and you should ensure you have the appropriate smoke detectors and fire extinguishers in place. Your family or employees need to have a plan to get to safety in case a fire breaks out indoors. That said, the statistics don’t lie. You’re much less likely to have a fire in a steel building, as the walls and roofing of your structure aren’t combustible. Not only does this limit your structure’s losses during a fire, but it also makes it much less likely for a fire to spread.

Finally, property owners have to deal with snow and ice. In the South, this isn’t a major concern for obvious reasons. When there is frozen precipitation, it’s rarely enough to remain on the roof, let alone to create load concerns. What about customers who want to build in other areas? Peak steel buildings are built strong enough to withstand more ice and snow than you’ll probably ever see. Even so, we do have features useful in helpful in preventing ice and snow from building up on a roof. Talk to one of our experts about these or any other special concerns.

Insurance companies understand how resistant metal buildings are to the biggest risks to homes and businesses. If your policy covers termite or other pest damage, your savings should be that much greater. In any case, knowing about these risks  and the ways steel protects against them provides you with plenty of bargaining power.
