Live in the North? You’d better watch out for the Snow!

Vertical siding buildings are the most recommended when it comes to states that get a considerable amount of snow. The vertical roof allows natural elements like snow, water, dirt, leaves, and dust to slide off easily without the need for constant maintenance, unlike other roof styles. And if the vertical roof can give you all that, imagine having vertical sides! It would definitely make your metal garage maintenance-free!

Another cool feature that we offer is our overhead doors. These doors create more of a residential look, and they can actually be connected to a garage opener. Please be aware that American Carports does not offer that type of service: we would only provide the installation of your metal building and the overhead door.

This 18’W x 26’L x 10’H metal garage is a perfect example of a fully vertical (a.k.a., maintenance-free) building:

  • 16’x7′ Overhead door
  • 4 – 30″x30″ Windows (2 on the back end, 2 on the side)
  • 36″x80″ Walk-In Door (on the side)

There are many ways to customize your metal garage! Before making a purchase, though, it’s recommended that all of our customers talk with their local building departments to get the necessary permits. Remember that not all states and counties are the same: some might require additional plans or calculations, while others would take the generic plans. Also, know that our generic plans come free when you place your order with us.

Give us a call and let one of our experts help you build that garage of your dreams! Does your area have a higher snow load? Let our experts know, and we’ll work with your requirements until we meet them. Want to see our buildings in person? Call us and ask for your local dealer! And don’t forget to ask about our financing options.

Are all of Your Belongings Stored and Protected?

Metal agricultural buildings offer great protection for farm equipment and even livestock, but these traditional units are not only for farm use. In fact, many of our customers opt to construct a metal agricultural barn for their vehicles. As always, we recommend that our customers check with their local building departments if their metal buildings meet the local codes before purchasing any of our units. Local codes from California may differ from those in any other state, especially if the building is going to be put up in an urban area.

One of the most popular buildings this year has been the ag barn. This barn can be used for many purposes. The most common one, of course, is as a barn, keeping livestock safe from the rain, intense heat and freezing cold. Some customers opt to enclose part of the lean-tos to store animal feed or farm equipment. On the other hand, there are customers who just love the design and prefer to use it as a garage for their vehicles. If you have land and space available, that would be a very interesting project.

Take a look at this metal barn installed near Chiloquin, OR:

  • 20’W x 41’L x 12’H (main unit)
  • A-Frame Vertical Roof
  • Horizontal Siding
  • 10×10 Roll-Up Door (front end)
  • 36″x80″ Walk-In Door (front end)
  • 2 – 30″x30″ Windows

  • 10’W x 41’L x 10’/8’H Lean-Tos
  • A-Frame Vertical Roof
  • Horizontal Sides
  • 2 – 9×7 Roll-Up Doors (one on each lean-to)

One of the main advantages of this barn is its vertical roof; since Oregon is a state with constant snow, the panels running from the peak toward the eaves allow snow to slide off without the need for constant maintenance, like other types of roofs.

Should you always go for a vertical roof?

Not necessarily. Although vertical roofs are the best choice when it comes to maintenance, if you live in an area that rarely gets snow, it’s not necessary. However, it’s highly recommended to get a vertical roof if your carport exceeds 30’ in length in order to avoid leaks in the future.

You can customize your metal building! Give us a call, and we will help you build the metal barn of your dreams. Remember that we also offer financing options if you need a little help purchasing your metal barn. Ask your representative about it.

The answer is NO, our buildings can be installed on normal ground or asphalt as long as the ground is leveled. Prepare to not Make Mistakes

Imagine that you’re making a significant purchase. What if someone stepped in to tell you about all the things that could go wrong when making it?

Granted, American Carports will certainly help you avoid problems, but sometimes we come across customers who decide to start the process before consulting a professional.

This is when customers find themselves in a situation that becomes difficult to correct, even for the professionals at American Carports. Here are three of the most common blunders customers make, so hopefully you know how to avoid them.

  • Prepare the foundation before you get the plans.

Many times customers decide they want a building of a certain size and try to speed up the process by pouring concrete before engineered drawings have been provided. However, a steel building isn’t a typical box that just sits on top of a concrete slab. Remember, this building is going to be subjected to wind and weather loads. Engineers and detailers consider your specific geographic area when they finalize foundation and building designs. In addition, you shouldn’t pour with preliminary anchor bolt patterns. Don’t pour your concrete before you have your plans—it’s a HUGE blunder!

  • Never take a delivery of a steel building before you have the proper permits.

Remember, each steel building is engineered specifically for its job site location, so it’s not like you can easily erect it somewhere else. The way to avoid oversights is to pay for permit drawings ahead of time—a small percentage of the total cost of the building. This also locks in your steel price, so when you’re ready for fabrication, any increase in the price of steel won’t affect you. It is significantly less expensive to make changes that will pass the permitting process at the drawing stage. If you wait until you’re at the fabrication and delivery stages, you run the risk of making a mistake.

  • Work with an in-house detailing team.

The benefit of an in-house detailing team is two-fold. First, it allows you to make changes or adjustments to your plan based on your changing needs or wants, on alterations to the structural code of your area, or even on budget demands—and it allows you to make these changes in hours or days rather than weeks. Time is of the essence with building. Steel prices may change, weather can change with the seasons (allowing only certain times to build), and contractors may change their quotes based on how long it takes to complete a project. The other benefit is that when it comes time for erection, you’re going to want to be able to speak with a professional in case you have problems or questions. Who better to speak with than the person who actually engineered the building? No one knows your building as well. An in-house engineering department allows you to have direct access to the detailer or engineer.

The steel building process is relatively easy—when you do it the right way.
