How to Care for a Steel Building

A steel building is a cost-effective way to increase the number of buildings on your property quickly and without significant investment. Not only are steel buildings affordable, but they’re also long-lasting.

However, even steel buildings need maintenance and care, or they will age quickly. Don’t let your investment cost more money in repair and maintenance than is necessary. Consider these three easy steps to keeping your steel building in terrific condition all year.

Conduct Regular Inspections of Your Steel Carports and Buildings

A simple and quick inspection is an effective way to make sure your steel carports and buildings are in good condition and don’t require repair. You may wish to schedule your inspections for the break between seasons. For example, you might do inspections at the end of winter and before the harsh summer season starts, as well as at the beginning of fall and before the weather starts becoming cold again.

You may wish to keep a file of your inspection dates, as well as the condition in which you find the building. If you have the time or resources, you can even take pictures of the building and examine them over time for changes. If you obtain repairs for damage on your metal garages, you may wish to take before and after pictures to document the work.

Always Repair in a Timely Fashion

Buildings like metal garages, metal barns, and steel carports are extremely sturdy, and they’re a fine choice for any homeowner or business owner who wants to place a building on his property that won’t need replacement just a few years down the road. However, neglecting the buildings and failing to complete repairs quickly can exacerbate problems and lead to higher-than-anticipated costs of ownership.

Regular inspections should catch any emerging problems, but those problems won’t just go away on their own. Waiting to fix various problems can mean a more expensive fix when the maintenance crew arrives. Don’t let damage from an accident turn a small dent or hole into a giant rusted area on the side of your steel carport. Get the area repaired quickly!

Eliminate Standing Water Around the Foundation

Features like gutters, downspouts, and features that draw water away from the foundation of a building are essential on homes and businesses because standing water and saturated ground destroy foundations. If you find that there are areas of standing water around your steel buildings, or you notice that heavy rains have caused the ground to become fully saturated, you may wish to make some changes.

Putting concrete down around the building can reduce the amount of moisture that may impact the building and keeping an eye on the gutter system can also reduce the likelihood of damage. Make sure to clean the gutters at least once a year (before winter and after the trees have let go of their leaves is an excellent time) and make repairs to the gutters quickly to avoid water damage. If you experience heavy snow one year, make sure to remove built-up snow on the roof of the metal building to avoid damage throughout the season.

Things to Consider When Buying a Carport

Since their initial appearance back in the early 1900’s, carports have had a substantial high demand in the market. Because the industry has grown more complex, consumers have to put more thought into what unit to choose and who they are buying from. From car coverage and protection to workshop areas, the uses of these metal buildings are limitless. However, there are a few things  you should consider before buying a carport, from quality to the work ethic of the business. The process of purchasing a product should run smoothly and be an excellent experience from the sale representatives and the manufacturer to the customer service and installation process. We want you to be satisfied with your decision. That’s why we’ve created a list of important things to consider when buying a carport. Read below for some food for thought.

Top Factors to Reflect Upon

You must decide if you want to purchase your building from a local or online dealer. Many of our  clients buy our carports from local dealerships where they’re surrounded by one or more of our demo displays, thus giving them a personal glimpse.

Take note on what you are looking for. Perhaps you simply need space to park your car or need a larger building to store large capacity vehicles. We offer different roof styles such as an A-Frame Vertical Roof, A-Frame Horizontal Roof, and a standard roof that will better suit your needs and satisfactions. Our knowledged staff can give you suggestions if you have any doubts regarding your choices.

Prior to choosing a carport location, check your local code specifications. It is important to consider your area’s building permit laws: you may need one to have a building on your property. You should also make sure, before installation, that the flooring is prepared ‒ whether it’d be concrete, asphalt, or plain ground. The geographic of your structure location should be leveled.

Consider investing in any additional add-ons. We offer skylights that allow the sun to shine through your structure, dismissing the hassle of electric costs and light installation. Depending on the flooring we also provide concrete, asphalt, or mobile home anchors for extra reinforcement that will maintain your carport secure.

We aim to keep our clients satisfied before, during, and after installation day. If you order a product from our company, you will receive engineered certified steel structures with free shipping and installation. With these services we include you won’t have to worry about transportation or construction issues. Our buildings will last for years, so we know you need a company who will be there for you and support the product you purchased, and who will stand behind it. This is what sets us different from the rest. Choose your carport manufacturer wisely, choose American Carports, Inc.

Why Are Building Permits Important?

You’ve chosen. You’ve showed your family. You ordered it. You love it.

However, does your local government office like it too?

You should make sure if a permit is required for your building. The unit must follow your state’s building code in order for you to receive a permit.

But why are they required?

Building codes are a set of rules that specify minimum standards for constructed objects such as buildings and nonbuilding structures. They are to guarantee that the public and your home is protected from unpredicted accidents such as fire hazards and electrical malfunctions. If your structure met the rules, then a building permit is granted. These permits are issued by your local city’s planning department, which are needed for generally any structure added onto your home.

Is it a hassle to get a permit?

Getting permission for your structure takes a little more than you think. Although it takes more than just receiving a piece of paper, the process isn’t a difficult one. Along with turning in your application, you must submit a blueprint of your desired structure showing the sizes and setbacks from the property lines. A contractor will look over your paperwork and, if accepted, will inspect and make sure the building is complying with the code throughout construction. After your unit is complete, you will need to have an inspector sign off on your building, which then makes it legal.

Does it cost money?

Like everything, building permits are not free. The price is based on the valuation of the structure and a permit issuance fee. Prices vary city by city. Failure to getting a permit will result possibly future costs. Although you can still apply for a building permit after your structure has already been installed, you run the risk of it not following the codes. You might have to remove the structure, be fined, or face problems when trying to sell your property. In a worst-case scenario, you might just have to alter the building to make it follow your city’s building code. Whatever the outcome may be, save yourself the money and the hassle ‒ get permission.

Things to Remember:

Keep in mind that structures are not the only things that sometimes require building permits. Improvements such as adding a room or pavement on your driveway require permission as well. Generally, projects that won’t change the purpose or make a significant alteration to your home won’t need permission. Stand-alone buildings have a lower tendency to need a building permit than those attached to your house. This is because an attached unit may affect the structural concepts of a house.

Don’t forget the difference between certified and noncertified structures. Engineers create certified carports to meet snow and wind loads. They are used when building permits are required and are built to meet specifications by professional engineers. It is recommended to purchase certified carports simply because they are more effective than uncertified ones.  We believe in quality over quantity, and live by it. That’s why we only sell engineer-certified buildings.

We understand it can be a small stress builder when it comes to getting a building permit, but it’s simpler than it seems, seeing that almost everyone has other buildings sitting on their property. You will be grateful you did it, and so will your wallet. No neighbors will be complaining and you won’t have to spend money on getting your building dismantled.

Not sure of your city’s building code or what to do next?

All it takes is a phone call to your local government authority, prior to ordering your carport to make sure it meets the building code requirements.
