Guatemala: Volcano Eruption 2018

American Carports would like to let those affected by the recent Volcano of Fire in Guatemala, know that our thoughts and prayers are with them. Our deepest condolences are with the victims and their families.

As most of you may know, the Volcano of Fire erupted on June 3, 2018. This has been one of the most powerful eruptions since 1974. The mudflow, and superheated debris switched directions after its eruptions and made its way down the mountain striking many small villages along its path. Many villagers were taken by surprise or simply didn’t have enough time to make it out of its path. Volcanic ash covered the skies as far as Guatemala City forcing the closure of La Aurora International Airport. 109 people have been confirmed dead, 200 missing and hundreds more were reported injured.

We would also like to recognize Shiner’s Hospital in Galveston, TX who have stepped in to treat 6 children who were badly burnt in the volcanic eruption and for all the hospitals on standby ready to take in more patients. Don’t forget to help our brothers in Guatemala.

4 Major Steel Carport Maintenance Tips

Steel buildings are extremely durable making them well worth the money.

Whether you are using one as a place to store farming equipment or as a place to store your cars, a steel building can hold up to just about anything. Especially when it is made with high-quality steel like at American Carports.

Although our steel building is practically low-maintenance and can last for a long time, there are some things you can do to keep your steel carport, barn or shed looking like new.

Check Periodically

Your steel building probably gets a lot of use. Since the structure is outdoors, a lot of times things may happen to it and can easily go unnoticed if not inspected. As a good rule of thumb, it is a good idea to check it periodically for damage, rust, and dents. You should make it a habit to check your steel storage unit at least twice a year. However, if you live in an area that sees a lot of bad weather from hail, tornadoes, or even snow storms, it is best that you check your unit more frequently.

Do Minor Repairs

After you have done your bi-yearly inspection of your steel unit, if you by chance find any damages, be sure to handle those as soon as possible. You would be surprised how much additional damage can take place from one small hole in your structure’s roof. Something so minor can allow rodents to get in or can allow the elements to penetrate your unit. By promptly taking care of any damage, big or small, you can stop further damage before it has time to develop.

Clean Frequently

Just like you home, your steel carport, barn, workshop, garage, or custom building needs a little maintenance which includes spot cleaning and deep cleaning. Spot cleaning your unit when you have a spill is important, but you must not forget deep cleaning as well. Deep cleaning your unit with cleaning products allow you to get rid of any mold or fungus that could easily set up shop in your structure. Since steel is extremely durable, using soap, water, bleach, and maybe even a power washer can be very beneficial in keeping your steel unit like new.

Watch Out for Water

One thing you need to remember about steel is that no matter how heavy duty it is, is still not good for your unit. Water is like steel’s kryptonite, so you need to try your best to watch out for it. Large areas of water near or beside your steel unit can cause it to rust which will lead to structural damage. To prevent this from happening, try adding gutters or downspouts to deter water away from your building.

If you want to make your steel building last for years and years to come, keep these simple yet key maintenance tips in mind.

Lean-Tos

Have you considered covering a small part of your driveway for your vehicle? Perhaps providing shade to certain belongings that need to be protected from the harsh weather? Whichever case best describes your situation, know that American Carports is here to meet your needs and specifications.

Lean-to units are great for providing protection alongside existing buildings. These structures can be customized to fit your needs. A lean-to is a structure that slopes off in a single direction. Most lean-tos are attached to another structure. Unfortunately, American Carports cannot attach lean-tos to your existing structure—but we can install very close against the existing structure. These units are excellent options for installing a covered sidewalk along your building to protect your customers or guests from rain or snow.

If you would like to put a lean-to up against your house to provide parking for your vehicle, we can also do that. The spacing will have to be altered if you have doors or windows that you want to remain accessible and open. Just let us know the layout and specifications of your property so that we can customize the unit for you.

*Note: Once a lean-to exceeds 12’ in width, additional material for reinforcement will be added.

A-Frame Horizontal Roof vs. A-Frame Vertical Roof

There are many options on how to customize a carport or metal building. Roof styles being one of those options. Although the following two that we’re about to mention are not the only options available, they are our most popular options. They are also hard to choose from unless you fully understand the orientation and reasoning behind the price difference.

The A-Frame Horizontal Roof (Boxed-Eave) is popular due to its residential style look. The ridges on the roof run front to back in sync with the roof line. This style is commonly used in areas that do not have much snow or rain fall but are not limited to those area. The panels run horizontally, so the unit requires a little maintenance to keep debris from piling up along the ridges.

The A-Frame Vertical Roof is our upgraded roof option. The ridges on this roof style run top to bottom from the peak down to the eaves. This option is popular in regions with heavy snow and rainfall. The direction of the panels makes it easy for debris to run off smoothly. This style of roof is the most expensive due to the extra material and reinforcement required for installation. Although this roof style is popular in areas with lots of snow and rain, many customers across the country still opt for his option due to the easy maintenance, sturdiness and look.

How to Care for a Steel Building

A steel building is a cost-effective way to increase the number of buildings on your property quickly and without significant investment. Not only are steel buildings affordable, but they’re also long-lasting.

However, even steel buildings need maintenance and care, or they will age quickly. Don’t let your investment cost more money in repair and maintenance than is necessary. Consider these three easy steps to keeping your steel building in terrific condition all year.

Conduct Regular Inspections of Your Steel Carports and Buildings

A simple and quick inspection is an effective way to make sure your steel carports and buildings are in good condition and don’t require repair. You may wish to schedule your inspections for the break between seasons. For example, you might do inspections at the end of winter and before the harsh summer season starts, as well as at the beginning of fall and before the weather starts becoming cold again.

You may wish to keep a file of your inspection dates, as well as the condition in which you find the building. If you have the time or resources, you can even take pictures of the building and examine them over time for changes. If you obtain repairs for damage on your metal garages, you may wish to take before and after pictures to document the work.

Always Repair in a Timely Fashion

Buildings like metal garages, metal barns, and steel carports are extremely sturdy, and they’re a fine choice for any homeowner or business owner who wants to place a building on his property that won’t need replacement just a few years down the road. However, neglecting the buildings and failing to complete repairs quickly can exacerbate problems and lead to higher-than-anticipated costs of ownership.

Regular inspections should catch any emerging problems, but those problems won’t just go away on their own. Waiting to fix various problems can mean a more expensive fix when the maintenance crew arrives. Don’t let damage from an accident turn a small dent or hole into a giant rusted area on the side of your steel carport. Get the area repaired quickly!

Eliminate Standing Water Around the Foundation

Features like gutters, downspouts, and features that draw water away from the foundation of a building are essential on homes and businesses because standing water and saturated ground destroy foundations. If you find that there are areas of standing water around your steel buildings, or you notice that heavy rains have caused the ground to become fully saturated, you may wish to make some changes.

Putting concrete down around the building can reduce the amount of moisture that may impact the building and keeping an eye on the gutter system can also reduce the likelihood of damage. Make sure to clean the gutters at least once a year (before winter and after the trees have let go of their leaves is an excellent time) and make repairs to the gutters quickly to avoid water damage. If you experience heavy snow one year, make sure to remove built-up snow on the roof of the metal building to avoid damage throughout the season.

30 x 41 x 12 – 3-Bay Metal Garage

If you have multiple vehicles at your house, it may be a little challenging to get every single one protected from the weather, especially if the only garage you have is the one attached to your house. Moving the other cars just to get one out can be quite annoying, too, especially if you’re in a hurry or the weather isn’t cooperating.

This scenario happens pretty often. That’s why American Carports encourages you to acquire a 3-bay metal garage for your vehicles. The big advantage of having your garage doors on the side of the building, instead of the end, is that expanding in length is not as expensive as expanding in width. End walls are pricier due to the material needed. With your garage doors on the side, your cars will be just as secure, and at a lower cost.

Check out this 30’W x 41’L x 12’H 3-bay metal garage:

  • A-Frame Vertical Roof
  • Horizontal Sides & Ends
  • 3 – 10’x10′ Roll-Up Doors
  • 36″x80″ Walk-In Door

You can always come up with your own designs as well. Also, remember that we can always adjust the length, width, and height of any metal building according to your needs. Doors sizes can always be changed as well. All the pictures we’ve shown, are just live examples of designs and styles that our customers opt for according to their specifications and tastes.
